Why sticker charts stop working

Every chart dies around week six. What the research says about rewards, why children are affected more than adults, and what survives.

There is a very specific moment, somewhere around the sixth week, when the chart on the fridge stops being a system and becomes a piece of paper with some stickers on it. Nobody announces it. It just stops being mentioned.

Started with sticker charts when my oldest was 5, then a removable sticker thing on the fridge, then some Pinterest printable with a coin jar. By week six the chart is just a sad piece of paper on the fridge.

The usual explanation is that you were not consistent enough. That explanation is popular because it is unfalsifiable and because it makes it your fault. Here is a more useful one.

Rewards genuinely can eat the thing they are rewarding

We should start with the strongest argument against us, because it is a real one and because we sell an app with rewards in it.

A meta-analysis of 128 experiments found that tangible rewards reduced people's own interest in a task afterwards. Rewards for simply doing the thing came out worst, at d = −0.40. And the finding that matters most here: tangible rewards tended to be more detrimental for children than for university students.

So when a parent says paying kids for chores breeds entitlement, they are not being old-fashioned. There are forty years of experiments behind them.

But it depends enormously on how the reward is attached

A later meta-analysis, across 183 studies and more than 212,000 people, found the crowding-out effect is not a constant. It depends on how tightly the reward is bolted to the task.

Which reframes the sticker chart problem. A chart where the sticker IS the job creates a child who does jobs for stickers, and then stops when the stickers get boring. Around week six.

The bit of the same research nobody quotes

The same 128-experiment meta-analysis that found tangible rewards undermine interest also found that positive feedback increased it. Free-choice engagement went up, d = 0.33. Self-reported interest went up, d = 0.31.

Praise, noticing, saying the thing out loud at the moment it happens. Not a prize. Feedback. It is the cheapest thing in this entire article and it is the only one with an effect pointing the right way.

What actually survives
