How to clear the family car in six small jobs

Only tidy a parked car with the engine off and an adult present. Keep keys with the adult, leave child seats fitted and do not touch controls, fluids or roadside equipment.

Updated .

Adult check first. Keep heat, sharp objects, chemicals, broken items, heavy lifting and anything uncertain with a grown-up. Choose jobs that fit the child, the room and today.

The small-job list

  1. Collect obvious rubbish

Put clean wrappers, receipts and empty bottles in a bag. Ask about anything uncertain.

  2. Carry belongings indoors

Move coats, books, toys and bags to one basket by the house door, then return them separately.

  3. Gather the travel kit

Put tissues, wipes, chargers and approved travel items into one organiser.

  4. Straighten seat pockets

Remove loose papers and return useful items neatly. Leave safety information and car documents in place.

  5. Shake safe floor mats

An adult removes the mats. Shake them outside and place them beside the correct door.

  6. Check the finish together

Look under seats from the doorway, then ask an adult to handle anything sharp, stuck or part of the car.

If this is still too much

Choose one mission and stop there. Or set a visible five-minute timer and stop when it rings. The deal only works if stopping really is allowed. Read how to run a short timed tidy, or why the big version is not a useful task.
