How to reset a messy kitchen in six small jobs
A kitchen reset works best when the safe jobs are obvious and the risky ones stay with an adult. Keep knives, hot pans, chemicals and heavy glass out of the mission list.
Updated .
Adult check first. Keep heat, sharp objects, chemicals, broken items, heavy lifting and anything uncertain with a grown-up. Choose jobs that fit the child, the room and today.
The small-job list
Bin wrappers and food scraps
Collect packaging and obvious food scraps from the table and worktops. Ask before throwing away anything uncertain.
Carry safe dishes to the sink
Move cups, plates and cutlery that are cool and safe to handle. Leave knives, hot pans and heavy glass for an adult.
Load the easy dishwasher items
Put plates, cups and safe cutlery in their usual places. An adult handles sharp items and dishwasher tablets.
Clear one worktop
Return food, lunch boxes and small appliances to their normal places, one section at a time.
Wipe the table
Use a damp cloth to wipe the table from one end to the other. An adult chooses any cleaning product.
Sweep the visible crumbs
Sweep the main patch of crumbs into a dustpan. The corners can wait for a deeper clean.
If this is still too much
Choose one mission and stop there. Or set a visible five-minute timer and stop when it rings. The deal only works if stopping really is allowed. Read how to run a short timed tidy, or why the big version is not a useful task.
