How to clear a dining room in six small jobs

Dining tables have an unfortunate second career as parcel depot, craft bench and paperwork swamp. Separate meal clearing from everything else so the finish stays visible.

Updated .

Adult check first. Keep heat, sharp objects, chemicals, broken items, heavy lifting and anything uncertain with a grown-up. Choose jobs that fit the child, the room and today.

The small-job list

  1. Carry dishes to the kitchen

Move safe cups, plates and cutlery to the sink or dishwasher. Leave sharp or heavy items for an adult.

  2. Bin napkins and scraps

Collect used napkins, wrappers and food scraps. Check before throwing away papers or craft materials.

  3. Stack the table clutter

Make one neat pile of post, homework and objects that belong elsewhere. Sorting it is another mission.

  4. Wipe the table

Use a damp cloth from one end to the other, lifting only light and safe objects.

  5. Straighten the chairs

Push chairs in evenly and move bags or coats from chair backs to their proper hooks.

  6. Sweep under the table

Sweep the visible crumbs into a dustpan. Skip moving heavy furniture.

If this is still too much

Choose one mission and stop there. Or set a visible five-minute timer and stop when it rings. The deal only works if stopping really is allowed. Read how to run a short timed tidy, or why the big version is not a useful task.
