How to tidy a living room without starting a row

Shared rooms collect everybody's things, which makes one child responsible for decisions they cannot make. Start with obvious categories and create a basket for other people's stuff.

Updated .

Adult check first. Keep heat, sharp objects, chemicals, broken items, heavy lifting and anything uncertain with a grown-up. Choose jobs that fit the child, the room and today.

The small-job list

  1. Carry cups and plates out

Take used cups, bowls and plates to the kitchen. Leave anything fragile or too heavy for an adult.

  2. Fold the blankets

Fold or roll each blanket and place it on the sofa arm or in its basket.

  3. Put cushions back

Return cushions to the sofa and chairs. A rough row is perfectly adequate.

  4. Gather books and magazines

Stack reading material on one shelf or table. Do not stop to sort or read it.

  5. Return remotes and controllers

Put every remote, controller and charging lead in the agreed basket or drawer.

  6. Basket the mystery items

Put belongings from other rooms into one carry basket. Return the basket contents as a separate mission.

If this is still too much

Choose one mission and stop there. Or set a visible five-minute timer and stop when it rings. The deal only works if stopping really is allowed. Read how to run a short timed tidy, or why the big version is not a useful task.
